Getting rid of NAV 2003?

Ok, I used the NAV uninstall to uninstall NAV 2003. I ran the
JV16 registry cleaner. I still have Norton Security and even if I
disable it it reappears active the next boot. I deleted the NAV
directories in C:. I can't delete the Norton Security directory
and files in Program files as it is protected against deletion.

I've not tried changing the attributes because Norton security
appears on the services tab in Msconfig. If I turn the Symantec
Services off the system (XP) won't boot - demands they be turned
back on. If I delete the files these services use I foresee big
problems.

I suppose I can just try to remember to turn off Norton Security
(I run Tiny Personal Firewall) every time I boot because Norton
Security stops my LAN from working. Before I uninstalled NAV
Norton Security stayed disabled on boot, but no longer. <sigh>

I just want to be rid of anything from Symantec. Do I have to
start over again and reinstall XP to do it?

NAV IS A VIRUS!!!

Why can't Symantec write an uninstall utility that works?

Ken,

Check the Norton Support site for RNAV.exe. It's a Norton stand-alone exe
that more fully uninstalls NAV than does the standard uninstall. The file
may be on your Norton CD, but if not can be found and downloaded from
Norton.

It does beg the question of why Norton doesn't build RNAV's functions into
their uninstall, doesn't it?

Craig

PS--If you have Norton Internet Security rather than NAV, I believe the
needed file is RNIS.exe.

PPS--Knecht, now that's a name I haven't heard for 35+ years--way back when
I was in a WI high school.

Thank you very much. I'll do just that. I was unaware of these
utilities.

BTW, I went to HS in Chicago and two in Ohio. Never even been to
WI. I'm not aware of any relatives with my surname anywhere any
more.

Ken

I printed out that and what seemed to be related documents. I'll
read them as soon as I get off line. Thanks.

BTW - my mistake - actually I need to uninstall NIS (Norton
Internet Security), not NAV. But the reference you gave seems to
cover that.

Thanks.

In my search for NIS uninstall info, in another newsgroup, I was
told that uninstalling NIS will badly affect my LAN because of
something NIS firewall install changes in the XP LAN interfasce
but does not change back with the uninstall. <sigh> Anyone know
anything about this?

Ken

You can fix NIS so it doesn't interfere with your network functioning:

Click "Personal Firewall" in NIS. Select "Configure" and then on
NETWORK tab enter IP addresses for the networked computers as
"Trusted" devices. You can get IP address for each PC by doing
start/run "cmd" and then "ipconfig" in the DOS window that opens.

NIS blocking your local network connection is probably due to a
particular version of Symantec Event Manager that got installed at
some update point.

Symantec has a fix on their site but it is a bit hard to find. I had
the same problem at 1.0.5.2 version of ccevtmgr.exe so I downloaded
1.0.3.4 from their web site and it fixed my problem. They're fairly
specific about the procedure to replace the file.

This is where I found it (long link - if it wraps you'll have to copy
& paste to browser in pieces):

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...Document&prod=&ver=&src=sg&pcode=&svy=&csm=no

If that doesn't work, just search Symantec Support (All Knowledge
Bases) for "slow startup" and the article is at the top of the list.

Sorry, posted this to the wrong thread. It has to do with slow boot
process.
