We have been getting lots of garbage using Internet Explorer so we decided
to switch to Mozilla Firefox. Can a person delete Internet Explorer or, at
least, get the Icon off the screen???

I'm using Windows 2000 with Service Pak 3.

Hi,

You can delete the icon off the screen. You may run into problems if
you try to delete the program as it will recreate itself from the
cache and if you delete it in both places it will yell at you for the
CD.

Please never delete IE on an Win-machine.
You can decide yourself, not to use IE - as I did to use firefox or
linux on desktop.
At least you will need IE for updates of windows or other microsft
products. Therefore let it on your machine. It is possible to remove
it totaly without being aks to insert CD or anything else. But you
have to change many things in your registry and I would not garantee
that your machine will work correct afterwards.

I made an try about half a year ago and I was working ... but it was
only for fun not for working !!!

The way to remove the IE icon from the desktop is to use the way that is meant to be used. Right-click IE icon on desktop | Properties | Advanced | uncheck Show Internet Explorer on the desktop.

Then if you ever want it back you would access Internet Options in the Control Panel and undo what you did.

Lastly why would you try to remove a system component from Windows 2000? When Microsoft said they could do it in US Court it took them 2 weeks and a crew of engineers and they finally had to admit it wasn't a walk in the Park. Why put yourself through that agony? Just remove it from the dektop outa sight outa mind.
