How do I get rid of the little balloon that pops up in the lower right hand
side of the screen to advise me that I'm leaving my computer unprotected
because I won't authorize automatic updates for Windows Update?

Or you can disable balloons entirely via a simple registry hack. Check out
line 11 on the following link.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

That line is titled "disable balloon tips." You can click on the link and a
window will pop up showing you some mumbo jumbo which is a registry edit
file. Basically you just save the page as a .reg file (on your desktop or
somewhere you can easily find it) and then open it. You should get a
message that says the registry has been updated or something to that effect.
You can then delete that file. Let us know if you have any more questions
or need more help.

Good luck!

Yeah, right.

And then spend countless hours fixing the
things they break.

No, thanks.

(and don't EVEN start in on me with the "if updates
break your system, something's wrong with it "
crap. That's bull and you know it. If it worked fine
BEFORE an update, and not AFTER, how is that
MY fault?)

Go into Control Panel, then Security Center. In the left pane click on
"Change the way the Security Center alerts me". Uncheck Automatic
updates, click ok.

Which won't run AutoCAD 2004 or 2005, even under WINE! Useless operating
system! Great for browsing the web and doing email.

Likely "any" qualified engineer, anywhere in the world. It is the de facto
standard for CAD drawings, and a requisite for obtaining employment as a
design engineer. Guess you didn't know that. I think there are more than a
"few".

And you used your psychic Wintard intelligence to ascertain that was a
requirement of the OP or do you just like slamming Linux? Jerk.

And the list of programs that Linux does not run hardly stops at AutoCad. I
would also say that anyone who wants a life besides learning how to do
anything on a computer should probably go Windows or Mac. I love Linux...
but at the end of the day I expect the people who will really deliver are
those that get paid for their 40 hours a week just like I do.

Why would I praise/endorse Linux on a Windows help group. You are the
foreigner here. If I would go to a Linux help group and tell them their woes
could be fixed by using Windows, I would expect a similar response to the
one I give to you.
