Can anyone help me,
I am trying to setup my Broadband account but my provider
says I need PPPoA and not PPPoE which is the only option
I have to select under Networking tab.

How do I get PPPoA - I have searched the updates from
Microsoft but there does not appear any entry to download
this only a licence agreement.

Please send replies to:

Thanks in advance

Hi, Ian -

PPPoA stands for PPP over ATM and is almost but not quite
the same thing as PPPoE. One difference is that PPPoA
uses an internal or USB modem instead of an external
modem and an Ethernet cable. The modem driver (and not
Windows XP) does the data encapsulation required to do
PPPoA.

With PPPoA the user still must authenticate with a
username and password - the software provided with your
DSL modem should have installed the proper bits to allow
you to create a PPPoA connection.

I'd call the ISP back and ask to have your call escalated
to Tier 2 support. If you don't have the option for
PPPoA the problem is your ISP's software and not Windows -
you probably need to talk to a bit more experienced
tech ;-)

Good luck -

In the UK, windows is not normally used to handle the PPPoA termination.
Most people use either a USB modem, or an ethernet router.

The PPPoA stuff is usually handled in the USB modem drivers you
get with the USB modem most UK DSL providers hand out.

Just install the drivers, plug in the modem, and it will create a 'dial-up'
connection.
You may need to set the VPI /VCI to 0,38.
Enter your usernme / password in here too.
You can configure the 'dial-up' connection to connect on boot-up.

If you are not using a USB modem, the other common option is a router.
In this case, the PPPoA termination is handles by the router.
Again, you may need to set the VPI /VCI to 0,38.
Enter your usernme / password in here too.
