Getting Pictures OUT of MS-Word

Is there any way to get photos OUT of Word 2002?

The copy-paste operation is really crude (for unknown reasons) and
produces a ratty graphic result if you paste into most programs.

I can get a high quality graphic by copying in Word, pasting in
Powerpoint, and then using Save Picture in Powerpoint. But, I'd like
to cut out the middle man.
