I was trying to install a favourite old mouse in xp home and I think I deleted all the mouse drivers. Now I can't move the mouse pointer to log in - because the mouse won't work. If I could get in, I guess I could do a system restore. How do I log in when I can't move the pointer?

I guess all that works in windows - but I'm not in windows yet. I'm still stuck at the bit where it tell me to click on a name. No combination of alt, tab, alt gr, shift, the windows button or anything else seems to move the pointer or highlight a name

Any more suggestions would be wonderful.

You said you were installing and old favorite mouse. Does that mean
that you have a newer mouse around?

Try plugging that mouse in the computer and boot with the newer mouse.
Then install the drivers for the mouse you want. Please verify that
the old mouse is compatible with Windows XP.

Good luck

No, the old mouse isn't compatible with xp. But I've tried the going back to the newer mouse and still nothing moves on the log in screen. And I've tried another mouse too, with no luck. I've tried going through safe mode too, but I'd still need to click on a name to log in there too and I can't move anything
Any more ideas would be great. Can I log in by typing somewhere

Hi General,

If you have Windows XP Professional try pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del
twice while you are booting. A window should appear where you could
type your username press enter and then type your password. If the
cursor doesn't move, try with Alt, Alt tab, Shift, Ctrl, and any
combination of these keys.

Good luck

Unfortunately, neither of those solutions worked either(I've got XP Home and I need to click on a name to get into safe mode too).

But I have had a result. You guys kept me trying different things and I've found a solution of sorts. I found an old adapter (I guess PS2 to serial) AND IT MOVED. I now have lots of other problems (like system restore can't restore to the two points I've chosen so far) but they can wait for another day. I'm in for now
Thanks for the suggestions and the support

Just hit the down arrow. My mouse works, but it's easier to hit the down arrow, the password box opens and I type my password.

The TAB key moves the focus around on the start up screen. Arrow keys will
move you between user names.
This all assumes that your keyboard input is being recognized by WinXP,
which means your device (keyboard) is working and configured properly
(correct driver).
