I had to reinstall XP on my home PC, in the progress, it is asking me for my
license key code again.

XP came on this PC when I bought it and only came with a Reinstall CD.

Why would it be asking for my key code again?

Is there anyway to find the keycode on my PC?

I used a program to find the XP key but when I tried to input it again it
said the key is not authorized?

How can I be running an illegal copy of XP if it were installed by Compaq?

Thanks

I'm not sure about this but I think I read somewhere that the number that
gets installed when you buy a machine with an oem version is not the same as
the number you need to re-install it. The number you need is normally on a
label stuck on the side of the machine or in the documentation that came
with it.

If you can't find it try contacting Compaq directly. They'll probably want
the machine's serial number

On my Gateway the 25 digit authorization key is on the back of the computer. It
is not the same as the "serial number."
