Getting legal

A young "friend" did me the "favor" of installing XP Pro as a "surprise" on
one of our PCs. Well it isn't a legit copy and I now have the task of fixing
that. (I've had a serious chat with the my young friend about piracy, it's
consequences and about making changes to others computers with out
permission. Maybe he heard me?)

I've looked here but not found a complete answer on what I need to do and
buy to "get right with MS".

How can I tell if I can buy a License for the illitigimate copy already
installed and register and change the key. The key I have does not have
"OEM" in it so I assume it is something other than an oem version. I
confiscated the CD for the illitigimate version so I have that if necessary.

Failing that can I buy an upgrade version and install it ontop of an
existing copy of XP pro that is not an OEM version?

Failing that can I buy an OEM version and install that? with out
reformatting?

Failing that can I buy a full retail version and install that? without
reformatting?

Greetings --

Are you trying to install Service Pack 1 and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and use a legitimate full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP

Remember, you should also report whomever provided your "young
friend" the pirated software to your local law enforcement agency.
