getting "Drive C:/ is corrupt" message during installation

Clean Install From Windows ME To XP Pro. eMachines eTower, Intel Celeron
Processor, 128mb RAM, 15gb HD. The computer loads the cd perfectly When
rebooted, Setup says,

"Windows XP Setup has detected that drive c:/ is corrupt. Setup has
Terminated.

Setup Can not continue. Press ENTER to reboot."

But when I reboot in to ME, it works fine! I have tried this with both Clean
Install and Upgrade, both getting same messages. Does anyone know how to fix
this?

Note: If it may help, It has been occupied by 2 Linux systems, all deleted
using fdisk before setup.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Have you run the Upgrade Advisor? If not, start ME then insert the XP cd
and wait for the splash screen. Select Other Tasks and then the Upgrade
Advisor. It will alert you to problems that you need to resolve before
starting an upgrade. It will also tell you about potential hardware
problems prior to a clean install. I would add another 128mb to your system
for XP if your computer is using shared video (highly likely) since the
video ram is being deducted from your 128mb. If you have a separate video
card then you might be OK with what you have.

Well, I ran the Upgrade Advisor, But it can't detect my broadband internet
connection. I opened up the Internet Explorer, and it still wouldn't detect
it. I remember something about D-Link VGA Webcam not being compatible when I
was upgrading, but not when I was doing a Full Install. But anyways, how can
that be the problem? BTW, I will consider buying an extra 128mb of RAM.

Run the advisor from the XP cd.

When you are prepared to attempt the clean install, disconnect all
peripheral devices except the keyboard, mouse, and monitor. XP will
autodetect peripherals as they are added back later.

Good Idea... I'll try that tomorrow, as I only have access to my computer
via VNC.
