Geting around earthlink smtp access?

I have several clients using earthlink for remote pop access. Has anyone
found a way short of setting up VPN access to let them send e-mails to other
SMTP servers?

Will IMAP work instead?

IMAP is inbound, so it isn't relevant. What's the problem with the users
using the Earthlink servers? Can't they authenticate to them?

Earthlink doesn't allow access to any smtp servers other than their own so
you can send e-mail from (e-mail address removed) through earthlink.

I can set up a VPN connection through my smtp gateway but that doesn't seem
fair to my clients.

YOu need to set your server to authenticate using the incoming server
credentials.

Sorry - but I have no idea of what settings you are referring to. Earthlink
won't pass port 25 traffic to alternate addresses.

Then talk to Earthlink.

Use smtpauth.earthlink.net (with full email address and password
authentication) for the SMTP outgoing mail server.

I don't want to waste anyones time but is there a URL with more details? Or
is it as simple as changing my smtp gateway to that address and I can use
any e-mail I want? - I won't have to worry about it being a non earthlink
domain?
Change your outgoing mail server to smtpauth.earthlink.net and you should be
able to use any account to send from EarthLink's server successfully.
