When I hit CTRL-A in, say, a folder with images, I get a message saying
'This folder contains xx hidden files. If you want to select these files as
well ..."

Obviously this is the thumbs.db file.

How can I make this irritating patronising message box go away ??

Thanks ;)

Get rid of them hidden files. Go into Explorer\Tools\Folder Options\View and
select "Show hidden files and folders.

Without showing hidden files?

I'm not sure what you reply is asking. But the reason why you see this
message is because ctrl-a selects all files within the directory even the
ones you do not see. So if you turn on this option you can see the hidden
files and if you have no need for them you can delete them or not select
them.

?
Setting 'show hidden files' in AllenM's post will show hidden files- can you
explain your response please? It's not clear what you mean- you can't really
show the hidden files without showing them....

It may be that you could delete the files depending on what they are, but
they may just get recreated depending on what they are. They may be needed
for something- some programs may leave a log file, or they may be previews
for quick viewing, or a log of virus checks, or- well almost anything.
Unhide the files and identify what they are. Get the file name extender too
as your system may be set to hide that for known file types- that may help
identify the source of the files or what they are.
(To show that information in Windows Explorer Tools, Folder options, View -
Hidden files and folders- Show. You an always reset it back when done if you
want).

Make the thumbs.db file go away if it bothers you so much. Folder
Options, View, Do NOT Cache thumbnails. Then delete the file.

Thanks Bob I - that was what I was after. :)
