I've a Toshiba Satellite A45-S120 laptop in a wireless Lan with a Dell desktop.

No problem accessing the Dell Desktop from the Toshiba Laptop. However, if
I attempt to access the laptop from the desktop, I'm met with a screen that
requests my password. How can I get rid of this request?

Many thanks.

Create a duplicate username and password on both computers. Use this user on
both computers. I'm assuming the laptop has XP Pro and the desktop has XP
Home?

Kerry,

Both computers have XP home. I'm not greeted with a user name or password
request on either machine when I start up (probably got rid of them earlier
as I'm the only user of both machines). So are you saying I need to start
signing in again - this time with a new user name and password on each
machine?

Hi Bob,
On the LAN Connection Incon Right click on it and select Properties and Go
to Access Control and see if shares is enabled and if you have the shares on
this computer/Laptop with password and user name.
Be sure your Windows Firewall is not blocking the LAN on the Laptop from
accessing the Desktop, or if you have a third party Firewall allow access to
the LAN.
Hope this helps

nass

If they are both Home then it may a firewall problem. Have you run the
networking wizard on both computers?

I haven't run the wizards but I will.

Thanks

Is it asking for a password for your account or for the Guest
account? If it's the Guest account, do the following:

Go to Start -> Run and enter cmd.exe in the Open box.
At the command prompt enter the following command,

net user guest

Hit Enter.
You should see Yes next to Account Active.
If it says no, enter the following command at the prompt,

net user guest /active:yes

Hit Enter.
Test to see if you can now access shared resources on the
laptop.

Nepatsfan,

It was asking for the guest account which was inactive and iis now active.
The shortcut I've successfully used in the past to reach my laptop from my
desktop is: \\toshiba\c
Recently that's resulted in the request for a password for the guest
account. But now that the guest account is active I no longer get the
password request but I get a "Problem with Shortcut" message that "The drive
or network connection that the shortcut 'Toshiba C Drive.lnk' refers to in
unavailable...
I need to know what steps I can take to "make it available".

Again, thanks for your patience

On the desktop PC, what happens when you go to Start -> Run and
enter \\toshiba in the Open box? What error message is
displayed?

On the desktop PC, do any folders on the Toshiba show up in My
Network Places? What happens when you try to open them?

If you receive an error message when trying the above
procedures then I'll echo the advice that you've already
received from Kerry Brown and nass. It sounds like your
firewall program is blocking access. You might want to
uninstall Zone Alarm and enable File and Print sharing on the
Windows XP firewall to see if this solves your problem.

If none of these suggestions are helpful, you might want to
post your question to the Windows XP networking newsgroup:

Hi Bob,

Try:
\\toshiba\c$
As the C:\ drive is not shared as default, you should use your
administrative share which ends with the $ sign.
Otherwise, check if your Toshiba also has the computername toshiba. To do
so, rightclick My Computer, select properties, select Computer Name.

Goog luck
