I would like to stop many (but not all) of the icons from appearing in the
system tray, but necessarily stop the programs from running. How do I do
this?

Thanks in advance... Bob

If you right click on the icons you usually can enter the associated programs
options, in their you may find away of turning off the icon.

On the one that don't have this feature use Windows XP hide feature.

If you hover the mouse over the icons it will tell you what it is.
-each program will behave differently so you will have to experiment a
bit.
-click or right click the desired icons.
-look for an options, preference or tools list
-in this list look for a check box that says something like, don't load
on windows start-up or put icon in system tray
-remove or add the the appropriate check mark in the box.

For programs that don't have an option to remove themselves
-click start then run
-type msconfig in the box then OK
-click the startup tab
-uncheck the programs you do not want to start that are in the system
tray (don't uncheck programs that you cannot identify)

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

Set the programs you dont want to run 24/7 to NOT run when windows
starts up.
