Get rid of all users??

My home computer (XP Pro) now shows "Administrator" and 2 User choices on
start-up. I would like to go back to the good old days. How do I get rid
of those choices and have no separate users? I want it to just boot-up into
Windows and have everyone work off the same account with no mention of
different users anywhere.

Firstly, you cannot delete the built-in Administrator account. Secondly, you
should ALWAYS use a separate account for day to day use. One of the main
reasons behind this, is that if your user account gets corrupted, and the
only account available to you is the built-in administrator account, then
the ONLY way into your machine is a repair install of Windows XP. So you
should always have a minimum of two accounts.
 
Had no problems in previous years. I know you can run XP as a single user,
just waiting for instructions how.

Of course you can run with only one User. That's in addition to the built-in
administrator account, which as I said, you cannot delete. Just delete all
the other accounts.

You should not use the built in Administrator account for day to day
activities. Keep that one as a fall back in case the normal account
gets corrupted. It login automatically pick one of the other accounts
that has administrator level privileges. Then follow this procedure.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password
To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user
name and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you
start your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Gordon's advice below is very good, and you should heed it. Yes, you *can*
run with a single administrator account, but it's foolhardy to do so.

Having had no problems in recent years is irrelevant. I've never needed to
restore from one of my complete backups, but it doesn't follow from that
that I should stop making backups.
