Issue, since the lastest Update I have 4 Machines that are giving the
Counterfeit message. PC's are 2 laptops, 2 desktops, HP/Compaq with keys on
the units. Purchase history was through Top Dist in US. So they are legal.

Questions:

1.Do I have to do a total re-install from system disks to solve the problem?

2. Is there a program or script that will tell me what the install key is
(to compare it to key on unit)? If there is a program and the keys show
diffrent, can they be changed without a total re-install?

Thanks for any response

Good questions but Gosh! the only answer I have is that I will be a
full retail purchaser in any Windows OS that I go for.#

No disrespect to any OEMs intended, It's just that the full retail
variant seems to have more oomph

Well, my tool Sandra Lite 2005 SR3 (free at www.sisoftware.net) shows
the key of my WinXP within the module 'Windows'.

I take it back, this program does not give you good information about product
key. I assume the information it reports is a OEM key as it does not match
the key on any of my systems. Even new systems have diffrent key's on the box
than the key reported by the software. 3 of my newer laptops that I tested
with that program all show the same key but are genuine.

Now, 2 were installed with wrong key, is there a way to change the key
without a re-install?
....

Yes - and you will find the How To in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Answered part of my question as the program:

Does give you enough info to tell if the proper key was used on
install.

Now, 2 were installed with wrong key, is there a way to change the key
without a re-install?

Do an in-place upgrade; i.e., a Repair install. See
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us. Method #1 notes that you
will be asked for the product key. I don't know if Method #2 lets you
enter the [correct] product key.

The Key that is reported is the one that was used for the OEM install and it
will not coincide with your Key. This is a problem to all applications that
decode the product key and AFAIK there is no way around the problem. I wish
there was.
