Years ago i used to provide PC technical support at a company i
worked. This was back in the early days of win 311.

I don't remember what it was called, but at the time, we all had boot
diag floppies that could go out and determine if memory and other
system components were good or not.

Today, when you buy a dell, dell gives you their own diags. When you
buy HP, they give your their own. The key point being that these
tools are NOT universal and often do little more than report what's in
the system.

Are there any good bootable floppy or better yet LIVE CD type of
GENERIC / (SEMI) Universal tools / utilities / apps to do this for
systems today? Especially if they can go a little beyond th hardware
diags and help restore, diagnose or recover a hosed WIN XP (or other
win based) system.

It seems like the trend today is to buy an app, install it on your
system BEFORE stuff hit's the fan and then run it aftewards. I like
the idea of having it be generic and on a CD or flash drive that i can
then use to universally troubleshoot many different PCs. This seems
most practical because often times your system might be in such a bad
state, that you can't do anything with it or the utility sw that lives
on the hosed system. If the sw lives external to the system, you will
always be able to use it to help troubleshoot a system.

Any thoughts from folks that use recent tools and with recent
experience in the area?

thanks

I use bootable CD's with HD diagnostics (WD, Seagate), UBCD4WIN (bootable CD
you can generate from your system - then you can boot your XP with a lot of
diagnostics without your HD (when crashed), GPARTED (Partition Editor) - all
freeware from Internet.
