I have two computers lan networked w/rollover cable the
host is running XP home SP2, internat Dial-up modem and
the Client is running Win98se both with ZA pro.

When ever the Client accesses the internet through the
host 90% of the time the "Generic Host Process Win32
Services" on the host will crash at some point. It
says "it has encountered a problem and will be shut down"
asks to send report then flashes a blue screen error then
reboots.

Any thoughts to why?

Hi,
I had ZA running after I installed SP2. I attempted
turning off Windows Firewall and leaving ZA in place and
got generic host process messages. I turned on Windows
firewall and left ZA in place and the system would
frequently crash - didn't get a blue screen. Uninstalled
ZA and turned on the Win Firewall - all is well.
Conclusion. Win firewall is not compatible with other
software firewalls on the saem machine.

Yes you have to turn winfire off when using another. The
problem existed before the insilation of SP2. I have had
several ideas but unsure of what the solution could be.

I had thought it might be the version of Zone Alarm
because I'm using 3.0 but it wasn't mentioned in SP1. In
SP2 I know they say you should use ZA 5.0 or higher. But
had problem before SP2.

Also thought maybe need a new modem mine is before XP and
had to download drivers to install it. They don't always
make update drivers exactly work.

Also wonder if the 98 accessing through the XP was the
culprit for some reason. The XP is not an upgrade if that
matters.

Just grasping at straws :(

I can only tell you what I would do. I would uninstall Zone
Alarm from the XP computer. Then I would have a good look at the
modem drivers. Is that an internal or an external modem?
External is less troublesome.

Finally it can't hurt to have a very good look at the details of
the first error message you get. It would be interesting what
exactly runs in that process.

It's a Modem Blaster Internal 56k V.90 pci modem that did
not come with XP so would not install so had to download
some from SB site.

Some of the error info of the "generic host process win32
services has encountered an error bla bla bla sorry for
bla bla" are :svchost.exe SzAppVer:5.1.2600.2180
SzModName:ipnathlp.dll SzModVer:5.1.2600.2180
OffSet:0010D58

Is that what you mean?

Yes. ipnathlp.dll is part of Windows and its NAT (Network
Address Translation) function, probably ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing).

If indeed this DLL crashes, then this is a Windows defect.
Nonetheless there could be a workaround, by removing the
situation in which the DLL crashes. Unfortunately I don't know a
complete solution.

What happens if you disable ICS? Would the crashes disappear? I
assume you currently try to use ICS. Some of the suspicion still
falls on the modem driver, but if it's only ICS that won't work,
there may be some simple ways around it. Can you borrow an
external modem for a test?

The crash only accures when the client is accessing the
internet through the host. The host can brouse the
internet crash free as long as the client doesn't attempt
to.

The client gains access to the net goes to home page and
may or may not be able to do several hops before the
crash happeneds.

I have noticed since I installed SP2 that the second blue
screen reboot doesn't come up. Instead after you send
report the guest still has access but the host does not.
The host is then unable to close the modem connection
down or bring up it's status. I must reboot to close the
modem out and return the computer to normal.

Outside of internet access all other interactions between
the host and the client are flawless. I have never had
any trouble transfering files of any size or accessing
media from one to the other.

One last thing to try is a repair installation of Windows XP on
the crashing computer. Either uninstall Service Pack 2, then do
a repair installation with the original Windows XP installation
CD (must not be an OEM CD, must be a full retail version), then
reinstall SP2. Or do a repair installation with a slipstreamed
version of Windows XP that already has SP2 integrated.

For details, please check http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.

There are a few workarounds as well. You could use the
othercomputer as ICS host. You could buy a router, which is
recommended anyway and fairly cheap these days, then stop using
ICS altogether.

I really appreciate(<- lost without spell check) you
digging back through time in this forum to help. I am
going to go this weekend and get a new Modem with XP on
the Box and hope that solves it. Or when the 5.0
ZoneAlarm hits stores and I get that maybe. Like the one
person said he had trouble with his ZA so who knows. If I
ever find the fix I'll post it here for others to find
using search.

Old Versions of ZoneAlarm don't work well with Windows XP.
Actually with the new built-in firewall of Service Pack 2 you
may not need ZoneAlarm any more. Opinions on this differ, and
ZoneAlarm is definitely more powerful than the built-in
firewall, but the question is whether the latter may be
sufficient.

Also, if you one day get a broadband connection like ADSL or
cable, and buy a router, which I would then recommend anyway,
that will have its own good firewall.
