i have a compaq that has a recovery partition.is it safe to scan that
partition for viruses?

The recovery partition is usually hidden and would have been virus checked
by compaq prior to install. I have an imaged copy of my system (imaged by
myself, not the pc manufacturer) and this is regularly checked by my Sophos
Anti Virus. In actual fact my system has 6 partitions, 3 of which contain
operating systems and Sophos (which is the main anti virus on my Windows XP
Partition) scans all 6 partition during its routine scan. The same goes for
AVG on my XP Home partition. When i am using XP Home the AVG also scans all
6 partitions.
I would imagine, therefore, that your anti virus software is/has already
been scanning the recovery partition for some time.

Yes. It's safe to scan *anything* on your computer.

Yes, assuming your anti-virus doesn't tag old files as trojans/etc.
