I'm new to using Access, but I'd like to make a database for storing
genealogy information, all keyed to a surname. Does anyone know of either a
book specifically helping with this topic using Access, or one that would
give enough info on how to do something of this sort to allow me to do it?
I've used Excel for years and have lots of info already stored in that media.
Because of the different types of information to be stored, I know it would
take a number of databases all 'related', and I do understand the 'basics' of
an sql database (setting up fields, etc.) Thanks for any suggestions you
might have!

Allen Browne has a lot of good information on setting up a database for
pedigrees which would be very applicable to genealogy.

==>Let's ask it the 'nice' way...
Would you please, please go away Steve ??

This is to inform 'newbees' here about PCD' Steve:
http://home.tiscali.nl/arracom/whoissteve.html (updated, mainly the 'abuse-reporting' page...)
Until now 3700+ pageloads, 2375+ first-time visitors
(these figures are real and rapidly increasing)

Why is this ???
Because Steve is the ONLY person here who continues to advertise in the groups.

It is not relevant whether he advertised in *this* particular post or not...
==> We want him to know that these groups are *not* his private hunting grounds!

For those who don't like too see all these messages:
==> Simply killfile 'StopThisAdvertising'.
Newbees will still see this warning-message.

For 4 or 5 generations, you can efficient run a query using a single table
for people. Move your Excel data to Access by importing it, then add a field
for ParentID and use the PersonID (the Primary Key from elsewhere in the
table) as the value. An example using horse pedigrees is available from
Allen Browne's website:

There's a free one which you can download on the Microsoft Office website.
Don't know the exact link. I downloaded the one for Access 2000 but it
should work with later versions of acc too.

I must say though, that the Acc2000 version, now I've tried it out, keeps
snarfing up on some FileDialog and AddItem code Haven't figured out why
yet, probably some missing reference or the other but I'm not sure which
one.
Can't recommend it at the moment. Perhaps it works better in later versions
of Access.

Normally I would not recommend any other software in an Access forum, but
the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church has a fully funtional genealogy
database that is not in Access but has been around for a very long time.
It's called Personal Ancestral File, is very comprehensive, and it is FREE!
I have used versions of it for 15 - 20 years and have over 9,000 relatives
entered into my copy. Find it at familysearch.com - why reinvent the wheel?
