My OS is Windows (Home) with SP 2 installed. I do not have "Office"
installed but I have the "Works Suite" installed and it includes Word.

After reading about the subject patch, I wondered if my installation of the
Works Suite might require the patch. I went to the Windows Update site and
the subject patch popped up so I clicked on it. Twice it failed to install,
but the suggestion seemed to be made that I try again. It failed one more
time but the third time it did install successfully. The whole process
seemed strange and ambiguous.

Now I wonder:
(1) Did I really need that patch?
(2) If I didn't need it, will having it installed hurt anything?
(3) If it might cause problems, how do I uninstall it?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi,

IF you read here http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkID=978162, you'' see a section that states, "Important Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is not affected by this issue. Windows XP SP2 users only need to update Office (if installed)."

So, you should check out any updates you may need for word. I have Office 2003, and followed what it stated and got the update. And like you, WU showed this critical update, though i have SP2 installed. It is screwed that it shows up, and can confuse many into trying to install it, though it is showing at WU as a 0 size byte file. MS is again dropping the ball in confusing people. I suspect many will be posting on what to do here.
