I have a Gateway 500X Penthium 4 os XP Home
with SP2 update. It used to say 1.7GB,but now I only see
256 Ram in that spot..Not sure why.Anyway.

I am having problems with it,ever since a
Gateway tech did a clean install, and put the
Fat32 file system in it,instead of NTFS.

I'm trying to do a repair boot and convert to
NTFS.Hopefully this will work for me without losing
everything I have on my pc,b/c I have switched modems
since then, the first modem V90 went kaputt, not sure why
and I have a Robotics 56 Fax Win Modem now.

My warranty runs out in Feb.2005,what is it
I should I ask or demand from Gateway (not in town
anymore) to keep my pc running past Feb.2005
Any hints would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, the only way you are going to get a really good answer is
to take your machine to a good local repair shop (not a BestBuy,
CompUSA, or Gateway home store) and have a professional look at it.
From your post, it is apparent that you aren't tech savvy (and this is
not meant as an insult, just an observation) since the 1.7GB figure
can't have anything to do with your 256MB of RAM and I don't know what
"spot" you mean.

There is no way for people reading the information you posted to
accurately diagnose your machine. You need someone who knows what
they're doing to actually look at it.

I don't think the FAT / NTFS matter will affect RAM reports. But where
are you seeing that? And where the 1.7GB, which would be an *extremely*
unusual amount of RAM?

Repair reinstall - if the CD you have from Gateway allows, Set the BIOS
to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not
take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license agreement take
'Repair Installation'. This will retain your existing software
installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be run again,
especially Service packs
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

Always back up essential data before doing any major system operation
like this, if you are still in a position to do so#

And if you want to convert the FAT 32 to NTFS (which the repair
reinstall will not do) first read my page
