I have tried time and time again to get a OEM version of XP Home (first
edition) to to take updates. All seems tro work fine until I get the last
update on, then when you restart it won't because it is missing some major
system file. It is impossible to do a system restore or recovery. You have
to start all over. After doing this 3 times I contacted Gateway and they
recomended not installing SP2 as there are incompatabilities with SP2 and
some of their systems. What is this about? Will SP1 work? I would like to
get some updates to fix a few things. They sugested I take it up with
Microsoft. I said they would tell me to talk to Gateway as it is their
product that is not compatible. What can I do to get some updates and can
SP1 still be downloaded?

SP2 includes SP1. Gateway is responsible, not MS. Call Gateway and keep
asking for a supervisor until you get satisfaction as a computer without
SP2 is not safe.

Any idea what they are refering to as "not being compatable" or is this a
runaround answer. Maybe board chipsets or something along that line. I
asked if there was an update that I should not take that might be the known
culprit but they just said SP2 was not neccessary and recommended not
installing it. I have to rely on email support as live support is no longer
available for free. Any recomendations on this route?

What do you mean by the last update? Have you installed SP2 and are now
installing post sp2 updates? Try installing items one at a time. You
may just need to not install one update that's causing a problem.

You also state you want to get updates to fix a few things. What do you
mean by that? Does the system have problems? If it isn't running well
installing any SP is not a good idea until the underlying problems are
fixed unless a particular update is designed to fix that problem.

Yes SP1a is still available:

Microsoft will tell you to talk with Gateway, not because Gateway's product
is not compatible, but because the OEM (Gateway, in this case) is
responsible for supporting its OEM version of Windows, not Microsoft.

I've never heard of incompatiblities between Gateways and SP2, but that
doesn't mean there aren't any. Nevertheless I'm suspicious that you're just
getting a runaround. I'd would call Gateway again, and if you get the same
answer, ask to speak to the person's supervisor. Find out exactly what the
incompatibillity problem, if it exists, and insist that they fix it
(insisting isn't guaranteed to work, of course, but being strong can often
get results).

Dave;
You probable had an incompetent tech.
Call Gateway back.
If you get a similar answer, ask for the website reference.
Such an important issue will have a reference on Gateways website.
If the site can not be given, ask for a supervisor and complain about the
incompetence.
You could ask in the alt.sys.pc-clone.gateway2000 newsgroup.

Service pack 2 includes SP-1 as well as all other updates released prior to
SP-2.
Follow this to install SP-2:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

If you post the details of the failed patch to the
microsoft.public.windowsupdate newsgroup, someone there will probably be
able to help.
As a minimum, give the operating system, specific update, error message etc.

If you really want to use the outdated SP-1a:
