I am trying to get a game to load and it now says that it could not get
direct x 3d to run. i used to play it with no problem. but i have updated the
drivers for the video card and now it wont run. ive even tried to remove the
drivers and reinstall new drivers for the card but still cant get it to run.

Can you try running the direct x testing tool to make sure it works
fine.

This is how you do that.

1) Start >> Run >> type dxdiag
2) Run the test in every tab . Make sure that all the tests run
properly. Otherwise you have a problem with Direct X or Video Card.

Other option which you can try is reinstall Direct X or Upgrade it to
the latest version.

Let us know if it works fine

So you started another disconnected discussion some 6 hours laters for
the same issue. If you want to continued the discussion, post into
the same thread.

"installed new drivers"
Seems a really big clue even to you that what you did resulted in the
problem. So what happens when you install the OLD version for the
video drivers under which the game used to run? The latest drivers
are not always the best ones. I had to revert to a prior version to
get a game working. Latest is not always best for a particular
environment.

I clicked run, typed dxdiag, then when the new window opened clicked to run
test. This was the following results from it.
Direct 3d 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (creating 3d device): HRESULT=
0x80004005 (generic failure)
Direct 3d 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (creating 3d device): HRESULT=
0x8876086c (error code)
Direct 3d 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (creating 3d device): HRESULT=
0x8876086c (error code)

My video card is a ATI Radeon 9550 series. After having troubles i did
follow someones advise and installed an older driver version. Still hasn't
helped.

After a lot of research i found that this might have if you have
catalyst 7.9 installed on your computer . Just curious , do you have
that installed by any chance ?

:

i had just updated the driver to 7.12. Since the trouble started i have
rolled it back to ver 7.11
Should i have rolled it back even further?

It was well worth the try. Game is now loading and displaying again. There
is a slight oddness around the outside edge of the screen, but at least i now
know what was the problem. The new and current dirver was giving me problems.
Thanks again everyone. i would have never thought that a updated driver would
impede the game working right. thanks again.

Yep, same error that I had. I had to revert to the next prior MAJOR
version (the digit to the left of the decimal point). I would run the
dxdiag tests to see when the above error went away. Then I would walk
up through the minor versions (first digit to the right of the
decimal). When I got to a minor version that failed the test, I had
to revert to one minor version back.

You can't always just step back one minor version. You might have to
go back a major version, or two major versions, and then walk forward
to see if you can squeeze out compatibility to a minor version under
that major version.
