Hi chaps -

a friend of mine is an Apple head (sorry) and is considering buying a G5. I said he really ought to check out what PCs can do first. The G5 does look pretty good but has anyone seen a good PC vs G5 review - I mean one that compares performance at the use level (eg with photoshop) as well as the tech level?

Anyone have an opinion what a self build PC G5 competitor would look like?

Well in my personal opinion i would have a PC withoutout a shadow of a doubt.

There easier to upgrade, there cheaper, and a £2000 top of the end PC will wipe the floor with a £2000 top of the end G5. If something goes wrong with your PC, its alot easier to fix because you can just come on here ;).

If you watched the gadget show on channel five last friday you would have seen the competition (PC Vs MAC) and the PC won hands down in 3 outta 4 of the tasks!

I would tell your friend to get a PC everyday of the week, you can get a PC to beform aswell, if not better, for half the price of a G5.

Heres an intresting thread https://www.pcreview.co.uk/thread-5648.php it should help you make your decision.

Good luck!!

With PC's as they are at the moment it's now a myth that Macs are superior to PC's in graphics-intensive programs. They were at one time, but no longer.

In fact, alongside the latest AMD 64 bit processor based systems coupled with a dedicated Matrox 2D graphics card, the Mac is starting to look a little primitive.

Plus, Macs are expensive/awkward to repair/upgrade.

Macs do look pretty though....

It would definatly be running and Anthalon 64 fx, at speeds anywhere from 2 to 2.5 Ghtz.
With an ATI gfx card (9800)
Up to 8 gigs of ram.
and a fairly large HD.

Welcome to the Site MacHeadtoBe :)

I've had to edit your sig a bit as it was larger than most posts!

Check-out this site http://macvspc.info/ for more detail... make sure you download it and read all about it!
I for 1 will be a MacHead soon! My friend bought an eMac few months ago, I said to him what most pc user would've said. He packed his eMac and handed it (with a book called "Mac for Dummies") to me and asked me to try it for a week! Mac can do things that we pc user can only dream of, and the way it does everything is so... I couldn't explain, don't know the word to discript it. He showed me that mac can actually run Windows-xp and Linux using VPC (whatever that is!) all at the same time on OSX...! You better go and check it out yourself, no point for me to explain if you are skeptical - just keep and open mind and the willingness to learn new things... see what we have missed all these years!

95% of computer users use PC, this is because there cheaper and easier to upgrade. There is loads more software out for PCs than mac, and theres alot more hardware to choose from aswell.

When you buy a mac your expected to keep it till its to slow for you use anymore, and when it life is over you have to buy a complete new system. But if you have a PC you can just buy a new processor, graphics card or memory and your safe for another year. This saves alot of money, not just in the long run!

You can get a great PC, which would last you a good few years for £500-£600. You would have to spend double that for a mac!

I admit it... I've played on one of the new powerbooks, and I love it.... but, I've never switch from a PC. The Macs are very much priced out of the range of most peoples pockets, and that is exactly what apple want, as it is the main area they can compete it. I don't deny they are great looking, featureful tools, but they can't compete with PCs for value for money and compatibility (which is what most users are after).

Apples and Oranges I say :)
