Do you have a third party firewall running? It could be that the thir
party firewall automatically disables the Windows Firewall at startup

In addition to a third party firewall, some anti-virus programs will also
turn off the Windows XP firewall. Did you perhaps install and new
anti-virus program?

Thanks Don, Yes, since you mention it I did not check whether the firewall
was on when I installed my anti virus program until I received a virus which
the program found and said that it had deleted, but it continually kept
popping up that it found a virus and blocked it, this happend every few
seconds as if the registry was writing email and sending them and the only
way I could stop it is by setting the firewall to on every time I booted. I
think I still have it in my registry so I am thinking of formatting my hard
drive which I dont really want to do.

May I ask which anti-virus you're running?
I only ask because I recently replaced Norton anti-virus with Kaspersky. I
learned very quickly that I need to disable anti-virus before any
installation that requires writing to the registery,
Dusty
