Fun with Fields Question

I discovered the usefulness of fields a few days ago on this forum. As I
understand it the field {SAVEDATE} is supposed to show the date the document
was last saved. This could be highly useful if it is reliable, particularly
for documents that I keep mainly in electronic form. I created a document
with such a field along with {CREATEDATE} (including the date and time) a
few days ago . I have saved the document a few times since then. Today I
opened it, modified it, saved it and then opened it again a few seconds
later. The {SAVEDATE} was still the same as the date it was created
{CREATEDATE}even when I printed it. The correct date and time of the last
save appeared only when I right-clicked to Update the Field. Is something
wrong? Or does the updating only take place "manually?"

See “The FILENAME field does not automatically update when you open a
document in Word 2002 or Word 2003” at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=832897. Same evidently applies to the
date fields. Fields will update when you print, provided you have "Update
fields" checked on the Print tab of Tools | Options.

The field is reliable, since it takes its data from the File
System.

Yes! It must be updated to reflect the changes (as do
all fields).

Check the following:
Tools>Options
Print (tab)
Printing options (Top section)
'Update fields' should be CHECKED.

Thanks. I was actually working in Word 2000 when I noticed the problem.
Seems a bit odd that the functionality of fields by limiting updating to
manual intervention or printing.
