Fun keeps running and applications are slow

My fan runs constantly. About five minutes after startup,
even with no applications running, my fan kicks in and
does not stop. When I am running applications, they run
extremely slow. What could cause this? I ran a virus scan
and a defrag, but these did not help.

It sounds like you're on a laptop, right? This is totally dependent on your
hardware.

As for your apps running slow, there are many possible causes for this. One
is that if your processor is getting too hot (which may be true since you
say the fan is running all the time), the processor will throttle down to a
lower clock speed.
