FTP using IE

Someone has posted some files online for download via FTP. All it
requires is a username (provided) and no password. From work, I
entered the FTP address (ftp://65...etc) in the address bar, supplied
the user name when prompted (leaving password blank) and a list of
files came up in an IE folder window for download. No problem.

However when I try this from home, I am told I need a password before I
can get to the file listing. It appears (from memory) that the folder
is different though...more of an Explorer window rather than an IE
window (based on the menu items). Also tried using a dedicated FTP
program and I get the same message...password required. Confused? You
bet!

It takes to long to download from work, but I can't get my home
computer to connect...ideas?

It is better to use a GUI FTP client that IE.

However, in IE choose; file --> login as

If the "someone" is at work and on the same domain as you then they
probably configured to allow other domain accounts or maybe just some
domain accounts to have access without a password. When you are
connecting from home, and unless you are using a VPN to make your host
look like it is on your work's domain, you look to be coming from a
different and unauthorized domain. The FTP server doesn't know who you
are because you aren't one of the authorized accounts on the FTP
server's own domain. You'll have to discuss with the FTP server owner
how they configured their security.

Other's have successfully download from their home PC and my son's
computer just successfully logged on and the download is happening as I
type. Still can't do it from my computer however. I am stumped.

I have no idea where the "someone" is...it is not at work. Judging by
how slow the download is streaming (my is broadband), I can only assume
it is not a commercial site.

Did all that. As i indicated in the original post, I did use a GUI FTP
client (WS FTP) and it failed as well. I turned off my
firewall...didn't help.

Tried my son's (on my home network) computer...it worked, but mine
still will not.

I don't get this

Did you set the client to "passive" mode ?

If you have problems connectiong to FTP servers using Internet Explorer when
your computer is behind a firewall, you need to enable passive mode so you
can connect a different way.

If this is the case: In IE go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and scroll
down to Use Passive FTP, select and apply.

I'll check when I get home, but both computers are most likely
configured the same as until now I would not have had a reason to touch
this option.

Yes, my machine is "passive". This is really killing me. I have
discovered that it affects ALL FTP sites, including where I store my
personal web page. My machine simply will not connect to any
FTP...always tells me that my login was incorrect.

Are you allowing TCP ports 20 and 21 ?

No idea...never worried about that before and it was never a problem.
Will check when I get home.

if it matters, I can't get in using ANY program, either IE or WS-FTP,
but can on my sons computer on the same network.

Are any TCP/IP compliant software working ?

Is this a WINSOCK or LSP problem ?

You might try WS_FTP95.exe or a more current update of that old Win95
program that I still use.

| Online all the time. No issues except FTP connections. This is
| killing me!

I'm stumped and only conclude FTP PORT problems or filtering ????

i am stumped too. the only thing i can think of is to use different
approaches/tools (other than IE), to see if the problem is unique to the
tool you are using, or affects all tools.

for example, try using FTP in a Command Prompt window, just to see if
that works or not. then try Network Connection Wizard (it will ask you
if you want to connect to an FTP site) just to see if that works or not.

this might help tell you/us if the problems lies with a setting in the
particular tool (IE), or is a port blocking problem (with the router or ISP)

sorry about my mistake. i meant to say

try the Add Network Place Wizard (run Add a Network Place, under Network
Tasks), not Network Connection Wizard. it will ask you if you want to
connect to an FTP site.

if it still does not work in a Command Prompt windows or with a new
Network Place window, then you will know that the problem affects all
programs instead of one, and might be the result of port blocking by the
router/firewall or ISP.
