FTP Time outs

Everytime I try to ftp upload a large number of files I get connection
time outs. This forces me to restart the upload from the last time out
point. But it is time consuming. Is there anyway I can set
something(?) to give me more time and stop these timeouts?

I ran across this suggestion this suggestion on Yahoo:

I did that and now uploads are taking place normally.
YMMV.
