I just purchased a Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP, and am setting it up. I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick I wanted to attach for my FS98. But apparently the 9-pin connection isn't appropriate. I also have an integrated sound card. I was told to get SoundBlaster sound card; and told I need a joystick with an USB connection. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi,

Your Dell doesn't have a gameport, therefore the most practical
purchase you can make for now and the future is a USB joystick.
There's no benefit in spending that same money on a Sound card.

The old 9-pin game port connector things... Are to be frank dated.
Generally they can still work in Windows XP, but it's not as near as easy to
setup as USB (just plug it in basically).

I'm guessing you don't have a game port, hence the talk of a SoundBlaster,
yeah SB cards have a game port attached, but some of the cheaper ones can't
compete with modern integrated sound chips. Do you know what you've got
sound-wise in your computer?

If you've got a game port on your machine, plug it in and use the 'add'
button in Game Controllers in the Control Panel, that should get it going.
:-)

It could well be cheaper to simply leave the sound you've got, (it could
well be better then a SB of the same price of a new stick) and buy a new
joystick instead.

The newer Sidewinders for example you just plug them in, Windows configures
them and it's all sorted.

Hopefully that made sense! :-)
