Frustration - Logon Hangs

I've recently installed new MB and CPU. I've done a clean XP install. When
computer boots, and the user icon comes up, a click highlights it, and the
computer hangs. I can't get past the logon. I can run a "repair", and bring
up Windows, but whenever the sleep mode goes in, I'm back to the logon icon,
and can't get back to
Windows.

I don't need a user account or Administer priviledges. I'd like to be able
to boot straight into Windows.

Can someone help?

There seems a real problem in your installation: try running
"sfc/scannow" from the command prompt and mending your installation.

If this doesn't help and you don't consider re-installing Windows then
use a program called X-Setup Pro and setup an auto-logon and that would
bypass the logon screen for sure. Since your installation is new only
and if you have no important data- I'd suggest a clean install. You
could even do a low-level format (using a utility from your harddisk's
manufacturer) to make sure no issues from the last installation exist.

I've been busy for a week, but today I installed a new power supply as
recommended by the MB Manufacturer. I'm now booting up ok? I don't know if it
was the power supply but it's working now? The only issue that I have now, is
that the computer won't go into sleep mode. Monitor stays on all of the time?
Maybe someday, I'll get back to normal. I did try your sfc/scannow.

If you know of anything to try to get power saving working again, I'd
appreciate that info.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Sometimes the power settings get messed up in the registry. Just try
going to the Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->Power Options.
Play around with the settings to your liking and apply the settings.
Hope this helps.
