I have been trying since January to get my network set up--was told by Gateway that I would have to pay for them to help me...so I was waiting to be able to afford it--ha ha--anyway, I am really frustrated

I cannot see my other workgroup computers--I can see me, and my shared files when I go to "my network places" and then to computers in workgroup--and the other computer can only see itself (can computers see? <wink>)...I read some of the posts about this problem and so I disabled one of the firewalls--well, I took the whole security system out!! UGH...and the other one doesn't have one--I know, I know--I am going to install one ASAP (the one I got the computer with had some sort of glitch and so I had to uninstall it), but I need help for this other thing...I do not understand a lot of the things everyone wrote--treat me like I understand things like a 10 yo does...walk me through it, please?

Oh, I am running XP home on all computers--have cable modem and wireless router--wireless adapter on one computer (I haven't even tried to do networking with this one!!) and wireless PC card (?) on the notebook...I have run the network wizard thing a zillion times and it finally took the workgroup name I wanted. I can connect to the internet on all computers through my "host" one, but can't share files...well, I can't even see the other computers...please help!

Thanks in advance..

Hello Mag

First open the Properties of My Network Places, delete or disable all
connections except your internet connection, (all computers). Right click
your IC go to Properties the Local Area Connection Properties will open,
install Client for MS Network, File & Print Sharing, Internet
Protocol(TCP/IP), NWLink IXP/SPX/NetBios Protocol.(this will allow you to
run the firewalls)click OK. Now back on your Network Connections click on
the left of the page, Setup a Small Home Network, the wizard will open then
just follow the instructions, when you get to the point to Create a Floppy
then do so, then you just run it on the other computer,(insert the floppy in
the other puter open My Computer double click A drive then double click the
link that appears. Be sure to name your Workgroup (not domain) the same and
give each computer a different name.

It will be better to have the Desktop as the host computer then you can hook
a printer to it and be mobile with your laptop.

To hook up Printer sharing just install the printer on the host computer go
to Printer and Faxes right click your printer, then go to Sharing, then set
it to Share then name it, click OK.

Go to the other computer open Printer & Faxes on the left of the page click
and a printer then follow the instructions.
