FRS not logging anything

Hey all , I upgraded my NT 4.0 domain to Server 2003 and AD 2 weeks
ago. I added a freshly installed 2003 server as an additional DC at
that time as well.

The File Replication Service logged a few things on day one - but
since then nothing has been logged. Im not sure what this service does
and if I should be seeing anything new logged in there?

This was the last message I received:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NtFrs
Event Category: None
Event ID: 13509
Date: 6/16/2004
Time: 1:52:05 PM
User: N/A
Computer: BSSAD1
Description:
The File Replication Service has enabled replication from BSSAD2 to
BSSAD1 for c:\winnt\sysvol\domain after repeated retries.

I then configured the time server properly and all servers and
workstations are getting the appropiate time from BSSAD1 - which
itself is configured with a nearby Internet Time Server.

AFter that though nothing has been logged. The other server has a
similiar message at about the same time and as with the first server
has not logged anything since then -

Any concern here?

Thanks,

John

If it's not logging anything...that's good - you don't have problems ;-)

This is an essential service - it controls the directory replication. DO
*not* think about disabling it.

If you're concerned restart it, it'll then log that last message after one
saying that it is starting and that it can't become a DC until it finishes.

Check out www.eventid.net for additional info on the events. There's also a
great deal of info in the MS KB on ntfrs...

Sometimes no news can be good news.

You should try installing Ultrasound. It is an FRS monitoring tool
that also has a feature that allows you to drop propagation test files
into your replica (SYSVOL in your case). The tool can monitor these
files to verify they are replicating to all machines.

To get Ultrasound, go to http://www.microsoft.com/frs. Follow the
link for "FRS Troubleshooting and Monitoring." You should see the
link for Ultrasound there. Note you will need to follow the
instructions in the Ultrasound help file (FRS Monitoring Help File) to
install Ultrasound - it requires MSDE (free) or a SQL database.

Please post FRS related questions to
microsoft.public.windows.server.dfs_frs and prefix the subject line
with "FRS:" to make it easier to spot. Note that FRS is used to
replicate SYSVOL on domain controllers and DFS root and link targets.
