front headphone port (not on cd drive) is not working

on the front of my pc there are 2 usb ports (which work) and headphone + mic
inputs. however, the latter 2 do not seem to work.

This would be hardware problem, not a Windows XP problem. You going to have to see if the internal
wiring in the case is faulty or the motherboard is faulty.
 
thanks. true, it must be a hardware issue but im hoping there is something
within XP that i can do about it. i noticed in the device manager there is a
multimedia audio controller that has an exclamation point next to it, which
cannot be installed properly, unless i'm missing something.

Hmm, is your sound working? If yes, it could be that you added an add-on
sound card but did not install the built-in sound card drivers.

What model PC are you using? Check your manufacturer's website for the sound
card drivers and try installing them. Note that even if you install them,
you will need to select the 2nd sound card to use for your headphones in
Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices.

Or if the sound card (or on-motherboard sound) is even connected to
those jacks. It's not uncommon for external jacks/ports on the case to
never get connected when the computer is built.
