Well, my bro-in-law called last night saying for the last week or 2 his PC
has been giving him a message that he has an illegal version of XP on his
computer.

So this is my first false-positive that I have to support. Absolute,
positively a false positive as I am the one that did the reinstall of XP on
his PC when his HD crapped out. Activation required a call to M$, and
everything was good to go for over 2 years.

What a bummer.

Try using System Restore to go back to before the malware/spyware was
installed.

What is the Genuine Advantage of false positives ....
$ 350 / EU 290 for MS' assistance, @#$%^&*

Yeah, it's a shame MS is such a scumbag distributor of malware. Have
your bro-in-law contact his state Attorney General about his MS malware
problem.

In the meantime, get rid of MS's Beta Malware:

I have seen a couple of false positives when a user profile was corrupted by
removing malware. I fixed it by logging on as a non-corrupted user, fixing
the profile, then rebooting and logging on as the regular user. The illegal
version messages went away. The corrupted user profiles had somehow had the
NTFS permissions changed on some folders in the profile. I reset them and
WGA was fixed.

Sorry Kerry, but it happens on ALL user profiles.

Thanks for posting the links again Kurt, I was getting sick of looking
them up over and over again.

Then the WGA forum is probably your best bet. You can turn off/uninstall WGA
as others have mentioned. I don't want to start a flame war on the merits or
ethics of this but turning it off may lock you out of future updates.

Please follow this simple troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click on the "Windows" tab and
then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the "WGA
Validation Problems" forum and paste the results of the WGA Diagnostic Data
in a detailed post:

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and recommend an
appropriate solution.

XP was good when it left the factory. Why should Micros~1 have to pay for
things beyond its control (incompatible hardware, incompetent users,
viruses, etc.).

You're saying a car flooded by Katrina should be fixed by General Motors
(even though it's a Ford).

Wrong Johnny......how is pushing a flawed WGA notification module down
through M$ updates disguised as a critical update anyone's fault EXCEPT M
$'s?

My point was ironic.
Ignorant users might think or made believe, they blew it and pay for M$
assistance in fixing WGA crapware issues.
The Genuine Advantage is purely on M$' side.

While the whole time M$ tries to push WGA as to 'protect the user' and to
offer 'special' utilities.

DOH !

Update.......

After running the WGA tool, it tells me that it is an 'invalid key'.

DOH! The key that _M$_ gave to me on the phone when activating is invalid
!!!

......they can't even write a good keygen for their own OS.

"Lock you out of future updates ..."
That would leave many ppl with numereous security holes.
Hence allowing criminals to still take over ppl's pc's and spread malware.
I thought MS had security as a prime focus?

The reason of ppl being mad is that even legitimate users, run into problems
because of false positives, unablity to boot, loss of revenue, etc.
must spend time and money (appart from frustration) to have a problem
fixed they did not cause.

Is MS on the wrong path ? ....
