freshing up xp pro

I seen this a few days ago but I can't find it. I have xp home sp1 and sp2
disk. how do I refresh the windows install and not muck up my present
program file for other programs installed on my computer

Back when I was using 98se it would get a little sluggish I would install
over the top of the present install and it would "tighten up" the sluggish
behavior. I was wondering if I could do the same thing with xp. I have done
the usual scans for virus, spyware and such. the system is clean

Yes, you can do a 'repair install' (settings, programs, etc. are saved
during). Try this, but be careful. Make absolutely sure it's a repair
installation and not a clean installation.
* Insert WinXP CD & reboot the computer
When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below:
* To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER
* To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R
* To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

Whilst many do I clean install of Windows XP in my opinion you should tackle
the problem a different way.

Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Delete all
but the most recent Restore Point ( Start, Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, Disk Cleanup, More options). Run Disk Defragmenter by selecting
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

After carrying out the above look in Event Viewer at the application and
system logs for Error and Warning Reports
and post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.
