Fresh WinXP install: A problem is preventing Windows from accurately

Hi,

I have a very strange problem. A week ago i installed Windows XP
(Select) on a machine after formatting the HDD. It worked for a few days
no issues then after one reboot i got the following message:

"A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the licence
for this computer. Error Code: 0x80090006"

Now, like i said this is a Select version of WinXP so although a serial
key was entered, no activation is required. The machine boots up but
gives this message as soon as you try too login. The machine WILL start
in safe mode.

I found some information on the www, that led me to try removing the
signature from the drive with a boot utility disk but that has not
helped. The drive is NTFS of course.

I have also read suggestions that this is an error that people
experience when trying to ghost / image a machine and the drive letters
get confused. This machine is a fresh install, it is NOT a ghost! It has
1 HDD with 1 partition (C:) on it and 2 CD/DVD drives in it (D:)and(E:)
and also Nero ImageDrive (F:).

In case someone suggests it, the machine is NOT a DELL so Q310794 is not
relevent.

Any ideas would be greatfully received.

Many thanks in advance

What do you mean by "special"? Is it a corporate version or is it a cracked
version? The only version of XP that doesn't require activation is a Volume
License version. If you are using a cracked version of XP or a version that
uses a leaked product key, you will receive this message. There were 2
corporate product keys leaked onto the Internet around the time that XP was
released that enabled installation without activation. However, Microsoft
has since identified these product keys and will not allow XP installations
that used them to be updated via Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=326904. Also, it is legal for
any software manufacturer to disable any computer that is using stolen
versions of their product. So, it is perfectly legal for Microsoft to crash
your machine if they determine you have a cracked/pirated version of their
software installed.
If this is a valid corporate installation of XP under MS' volume licensing
agreement, then call them and you should not be charged for support.
However, if this is a cracked/leaked version of XP, then I recommend that
you just purchase a legal copy of the OS. You can obtain the OEM version of
XP Home for around $70 and Professional for around $120.

I have already spent hours trawling the google groups finding out
information without a solid resolution :-(

NOTE: This issue can be caused by any software that changes the default
security provider. It is

NOT

limited to Dell computers or the Dell Assistant software.

Hi,
As I have a Dell and problems since updating to SP2, what
is Q310794 that you refer to in your posting? Thanks

How does this help? Its not even the problem i have, AND i looked for
the keys anyway and they dont exist on my install.

I said Select not Special. Select software doesnt require activation, it
is a corporate version. I do not use downloaded or cracked software i
have no need to. This is a valid problem on a straight install.

Sorry, I misread your post. Have you tried calling MS about the issue? I
believe they will help you for free when it comes to licensing issues. We
had an issue with a Terminal Services Licensing server and MS waived their
fee to fix the problem.

Andrew,
I had the same problem...but my problem occurred after loading a ghosted
image...It's just a thought but try removing NERO, I think you said that you
can boot into "Safe Mode" - you can see a post from me today at "?? SP2 ?? -
Problems - Hopefully the 4th time will be a charm." all indications that
I've found seem to indicate my problem is caused by Nero so it leads me to
think that Nero doesn't play nice with XP SP2... will post once I finish my
5th attempt at installing WinXP Nero will not be loaded.
