I've setup a wireless network on 7 new XPproSP2 machines. They can all
access internet well, and have their own printer. The xp firewalls are
turned off (but warning still appears) on all except for the one with the
router because that one will not share files. Each one has it's own password
protected user, except for the one with the router.

Getting some feedback here before I go further would be great!

My objective is to enable selective file sharing for each computer, and
perhaps have a couple share only with each other, etc.

I plan on:

1. Unchecking simple file sharing on all except for the non-sharing pc with
the router.
2. Adding all users w/passwords on one machine (called admin).
3. Setting permissions for certain files in admin/My Documents
4. Same as #3 for the other PC's.

Would this do the trick? Or is there something I would be missing?

Thanks much to all!

Rippy,

If you're going to have a wireless LAN, please protect yourself. Turning off
firewalls is not a good way to start.

Setting up accounts / passwords is good, on a LAN which you control and trust.
When you bring WiFi into the picture, and extend your LAN to all of your
wireless neighbors, you should use more than accounts and passwords.

I was told by Linksys I don't need to enable or follow all those security
settings because they are already set within the router - like WEP 128 bit,
firewall, etc.

All the tutorials I've read state to turn off the xp firewalls because
otherwise - no connections.

Is mapping network drive necessary if we just need to share files?

Thanks!

Actually, those tutorials say (or will shortly say) that you need to temporarily
un install, or properly configure any firewall. And, if you do un install to
diagnose the actual problem, you need to re install, and properly configure, as
soon as possible, afterwards.

A NAT router MAY (some models do, others do NOT) have a portion of firewall
functionality protecting the computers on the LAN from malicious incoming
traffic. There is NO firewall protecting each computer on the LAN from each
other - if one computer should get infected, a personal firewall on the others
could save you a lot of trouble.

If you have anything better than WEP, use it. The only thing worse than WEP is
nothing. WEP only prevents your wireless neighbors (the dumb ones) from
borrowing your Internet connection without having to try very hard. WEP neither
protects your computers from Internet traffic, nor from each other. WPA is far
better - any current products provide WPA.

And if you depend upon Linksys advice for protection, keep THIS link handy.

If you want to share files, a persistent mapping makes it easier. Or, you can
use URLs (aka UNC addresses) if you wish. Whatever works for you.

Yes I would use WPA/TKIP. The PC's have the Mcafee, and the spyware..
Do you have a tutorial on:
