I did a fresh install of xp by inserting the CD and
reboot. And I was given a prompt of a message about
hitting any key to boot the CD. During the installation
process, window rebooted every here and there. I was
given the option to hit any key again. (but I didn't do
it the second time and third prompt so on) Was wondering
should I let window install itself or keep on hitting the
key whenever been prompt.

As this is the first time I was installing xp which is
why I'm abit confused. I have try insert the xp CD onto
the cd-rom drive and immediately I was given the option
to install xp or other choices. My question is since I
can install xp by inserting the CD, then why is it that I
still need to reboot and go into the blue window and do
setup from there, what's the difference?

You hit the key the first time. If you hit the key again, it will start the
setup from scratch again.
If you want to only refresh a current XP installation, you can run setup
from within Windows, but if you are in a no boot situation or want to do a
clean install, you will need to boot from the XP CD.

That is why the option ii is provided. The initial time, and *only*
that time you boot the CD to start the process. After that the setup
wants to boot the partial install from the hard disk, and will then read
things from the CD, so you need to leave the CD in the drive, but not to
hit a key and boot from it
