My system frequently freezes, the mouse cursor freezes
and the system becomes temporarily unusable. I have to
disconnect from the power sourse to reboot. You can not
cut it off with the on/off button and cannot use
Alt/Ctrl/Del to restart. I have plenty of memory.

Can someone tell me what the cause may be. I have
windows xp

The problem may be caused by your CPU overheating.
I'd suggest you run some CPU monitors, to check the temp of
your CPU. Make sure that your heat sink and fan are
installed properly.
This would most likely be the case if this has been a long
term problem, or something's happened that could have
caused the dislodging of the heat sink.
