Frequent clicking & unwanted window deselect

Is anyone familiar with this problem -- it's starting to get very
irritating. About 2 hours ago, I decided to try Microsoft's
(relatively) new, and more importantly, free, entry into the
anti-spyware market: the beta release of Windows Defender. Well I
downloaded / installed it a little while ago. Seemingly, all went
smoothly, but after the first scan finished, every 30-60 seconds
(sometimes longer), over the speakers come that familiar clicking sound
you hear after double-clicking a folder in windows explorer. As if that
wasn't bad enough, whatever window is open at that second gets
deselected.

It's tough enough trying to type a bunch of papers without having to
click on MS Word once a minute. Any ideas if it's the new program?
You have to jump through hoops to download it and, seeing as I already
deleted the setup files, I'd like to avoid doing it again but I'm
at the end of my rope.

Thanks

I'd check the Application Event Log. Defender will log any activity
it is doing in the form of Event log entries. I've installed it (Defender)
on many PCs and never encountered issues like you describe.
