freezing during booting

I have a computer that makes all the proper noises as it boots from a
floppy. It gets as far as saying that "Windows 98 is starting", makes
some more noises as it reads the disk and then it stops and sits there.

The owner of the computer has tried to install another RAM stick.
Everything worked fine until then. So we removed the extra RAM but it
still only boots so far. So then I unplugged everytning except the
floppy. It gives the same result no matter which drive I try to boot from.

Does anyone have any wisdom for me?

Thanks
Daphne

This computer started out with winwp on the harddrive. When it wouldn't
boot from the harddrive we tried booting from a cd and then from a
floppy with win98 on it. It displayed the same exact behaviour no matter
what device we booted from.

Cheers

Replace the memory. It's possible that the owner zapped the existing stick
due to lack of proper grounding.
Other possibility is the owner cracked the motherboard trying to force the
stick in.

Daphne:
With all due respect, based upon the information you provided, it's
well-nigh impossible to diagnose just what the problem is, let alone coming
up with a solution.

It really would be helpful if you provided the following information...
1. Describe the specific components in the computer.
2. Why did the owner try "to install another RAM stick"? Was there some
indication that faulty RAM was involved?
3. When you say the computer makes "all the proper noises as it boots from a
floppy" what do you mean? That you can hear the kind of grinding noise one
frequently hears from a floppy drive as it tries to read a floppy disk? Or
are you referring to the POST beeps?
4. When you say "Everything worked fine until then." Do you mean that you
were able to previously boot to a desktop when XP was installed? But then
"it wouldn't boot from the harddrive"? Do you have any clue why it wouldn't?
It just didn't do so one day?
5. When you say "we tried booting from a cd", are you referring to the XP
installation CD? If so, what precisely happened when you tried to boot from
that CD?
6. When you say you tried booting "from a floppy with win98 on it", are you
referring to a bootable Win98 Startup Disk? Why are you trying to boot with
a bootable floppy disk? Are you now attempting to install Windows 98 on the
computer?
7. You say you "unplugged everyt(h)ing". Could you explain that more
precisely? Just what did you "unplug" and why are you doing this?

Daphne, I and I'm sure others, would like to help you but you *must* provide
more detailed information concerning your specific problem and the system
involved.
