freezes up totally

Windows freezes up in a game or even when online playing a game. I got a message twice when starting again after pulling plug as nothing worked to shut it down properly, that one of my disks needed to be checked for consistency. It checked files, folders and free space but all checked out. I did a disk clean up & defrag, nothing helped. Any suggestions

Are you up to date on critical updates & service packs,
also check in the Recommended updates/Windows section, i
remember there being an update for games and freezing
windows.
