The most common causes seems to be overheating and memory problems.
Check to see that all the internal fans are working correctly and not clogged or obstructed.
Reseat the memory, or try 1 stick at a time.
Leave the case cover off to see if it runs cooler and stops freezing.

Try lowering the "Hardware Accelerator" setting a notch or two.
Right-click the desktop, select Properties. Click the "Settings" tab.
Click the "Advanced" button, click the "Troubleshoot" tab.

I have a fairly new computer with XP and I have the same problem, my computer
will just freeze up at any time.

Things to do/check
1. turn down hardware acceleration on your video card. [troubleshoot tab in
display properties]
2. look for newer video drivers from the manufacturer NOT MS
3. reseat all cables /connectors [disconnect the power cord before working
inside the housing]
4. check for dust inside the housing , particularly in the CPU
heatsink fins.
5. run memtest 86+ and test RAM.
6. try a different power supply with a higher wattage - 350W or better
and preferably Intel P4/AMD approved.
7. be 100% sure you are malware/virus free
