Freeware to handle Excel files (spreadsheet software)?

Any freeware that will open, edit, save .XLS files and allow Excel to still
be able to open and edit the files after? I have sent myself some XL files
from work but do not have Excel on home machine (Win 98SE and XP home)

Try openoffice

www.openoffice.org

It supports importing and exporting of Excel files.
But beware that it is resource hogging even on my 512MB,P4 2.4GHZ
machine.
 
 
 
I recommend 602pro pc suite, comes with a text processor and spreadsheet,
and is very light on resources. If your home pc is very slow, you could try
locating an older version, pc suite 2001.
