worth a shot and really a great FREE program, it is a glorified, new n
improved PAINT.

Paint.NET features look good on paper, and it has a beautiful
interface, but I found two serious shortcomings for my use:

I like the ability to set the transparency of the background image so
I can place another layer on top of it and use that layer as "tracing
paper" on the background image. For some reason Paint.NET does not
allow one to set the transparency of the background image, though it
allows one to do so for the other layers.

After placing text on a new layer, Paint.NET does not allow me to move
the text around. Perhaps I'm not using the program correctly, but I
don't see the point of forcing text onto a new layer if it cannot be
moved. Its text handling is as bad as Irfanview's in that regard.

Serif PhotoPlus6 is a very good freeware photo editor, and it supports
Adobe plugins. But does Serif still require you to download a new
registration every time you reinstall their app? In other words, does
the software become non-functional if the company goes out of business
and cannot or will not provide continuing registrations (ref: ABC
VideoRoll)? I would rank PhotoPlus6 as the best freeware photo editor
(much better than GIMP) if it weren't for the possible registration
abandonment issue. That possibility alone leads me to refer to the
Serif freebie apps as trialware.
