Are there any favourites for those of us, who like to compose sheet music?
Any (helpful) suggestions would gratefully investigated.
It's for budding Brahms and Liszt's.

For Music Lovers Who Read Music - Convert MIDI files to sheet music with
the free MidiNotate Player.
- Find, download, and unzip music (MIDI) files from the Internet, using
MidiNotate Player's built-in browser.
- Convert MIDI (.mid) and Karaoke (.kar) files to sheet music with
amazing accuracy.
- View the music and lyrics on the screen as the notes play.
- Print the music at any font size.

Learn to read music by blasting notes into submission! Use either your
computer keyboard or MIDI keyboard / piano as input.

I'm afraid if you want to use staff entry to compose midi files there's no
freeware. It's on the pricelessware wish list and has been for ages.

I've just followed the link supplied by aa fussy just in case this was
finally the answer, but it did not download, and, though I have no
experience of this source, a look back at the comments on this ng inspired
no great hopes.

My main reason for this post is for someone to prove me wrong ... please
do!

Well, thank you all, but all suggestions so far exceed our requirements.
All that is required is the ability to write notes, as desired, on a line
and add lyrics underneath. No automation or bells nor whistles!
Just plain computerised scoring ( to make ones shaky handwriting look
extremely steady)

Whoops, beg yer pardon, some of us are undistinguished instrumentalists and
have to get the computer to perform our masterpieces.

I think Finale Notepad might suit

(you have to register, but the full Finale is highly rated, I've no
personal experience) or a new one on me , you might like to test it,

You are a star *
I've downloaded both and will give them a test run.
Musette looks eminently suitable!
So, once again it's not what you know, but who!
