The free version has the same "engine" as the Deluxe version and the
Pro-version which is use by many tax professionals. The differences
are in the extra features provided. Given the same tax data, the free
version will produce the same tax return as the pro-version.

But can it be used on the IRS website to file electronic returns? Looks like
they want you to pay a commercial tax preparer, or at least get your
software from them. I don't see any provision to file an electronic return
using independent software. Is there?

Two of the current computer magazines have a free H&R Block CD..they may
be putting themselves out of business if its for real. I haven't tried
it yet. Still waiting on my W-2s?.

You have to be approved by the IRS to directly file to their server,
and it's a lengthy (and costly) process to become approved.

But TaxAct will do your filing for you - for a fee. You just click on
a button after you've entered all the information it needs, and it'll
print a paper copy or, for a fee, file electronically. I'm not aware
of anyone who will file your e-return return for free.

The H&R Block version of TaxCut on the CDs requires a credit card
charge of $14.95 to activate.
