Freeing up disk space

My Computer has a C and a D drive. My C drive is getting full. How can I
transfer programs from C to d drive? Can I just cut and paste, or do I have
to reinstall on D? I tried to cut and paste MS Office, but it warned my that
it may caues the programs not to work. Any help would be appreciated.
 
You need to reinstall.

However, you should be aware that all but the simplest programs will install
part of themselves to the system partition, and others won't let themselves
be installed anywhere else. The real solution in your case is to increase
the size of your C drive by shrinking the size of your D drive.

This requires partitioning software - like Partition Magic - and is an
advanced procedure. If you're not feeling confident, ask someone with
experience to help you.
 
Who is the manufacturer of your computer and what model.

How large is your C drive and how much free space? The same information
would also be helpful for your drive. Click on the drive in Windows
Explorer and select Properties to get this information. Has either drive
been partitioned? Are the drives formatted as FAT32 or NTFS?

Right click on your My Computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties, System Restore. What is the Status for each drive listed?

To move programmes use Add / Remove Programs in Start, Control Panel,
Add / Remove Programs to uninstall programmes. Create a Programs
Directory on your other partition and reinstall there.

Some other notes you may find useful.

Create a My Documents folder in another partition and copy ( not move )
the contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files
in your My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use
Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin ). You will also need to
change Default File locations in the Microsoft Office programmes you
use. For Word go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents,
click on Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options,
General and change default file path.

For Temporary Internet Files select Start, Control Panel, Internet
Options, Temporary Internet Files. Settings, Move Folder.

To move the Outlook Express Store Folder select in Outlook Express
Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder, Change.

Re-install programs onto D:.. when you reach the point where the
installation is telling you the path for the installation, press on a button
that may be labelled 'Change' or 'Browse".. it is easy enough to do..

What you can't do is cut and paste programs and or files.. you can drag and
drop, but no programs.. the program installation process not only creates
program folders specific to the program, it also places required files into
the Windows folders.. at this point, all files know the whereabouts of all
other relevant files.. this is why you can't just move program folders
around..

You might also want to look at getting a larger drive to use..
 
Hey,
You can not just copy and paste ur installed programs like that...
You will hv to re-install them only.
Another way to clean space on ur C: drive is that run the DiskCleanUp
utility from the Accessories -> System Tools...

From there in the MORE OPTIONS tab, in the system restore part, click "Clean
Up", and also clean up all unnecessary files.

Reinstall ur programs. You could also burn stuff like snaps/music to
CD. Here's a link on freeing up space by cleanup.Run a chkdsk an
defragment the dirve for best results after u free up space.
