Free Windows skills test

Hi,

Is there a free Windows troubleshooting skills test on the internet with a
open license (like Creative Commons or GPL - I want to use the test on my
site)?

If not, What 10-20 questions would you ask someone to see if he/she knows
her/his way around Windows support before hiring him/her?

I think question number one would be "do you speak Hindi as your one and
only language".

Hire applicants who have passed comprehensive tests;
Look for these Certifications in their Resume:
The Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) credential proves
that you have the skills to support users who run Microsoft Windows XP. It
also proves that you can troubleshoot desktop environments that run on the
Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

CompTIA A+ certification validates the knowledge and skills of entry-level
computer service technicians... CompTIA A+ confirms a technician's ability
to perform tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive

It's for volunteering, not hiring and I want to attract a large amount of
people - not just certified ones... I want a test I can use to test people
myself.
 
You can try that M$ Interactive Tutorial stuff. It takes about 20 hours to go
through, and there are a handful of quiz questions at the end of every 5-10
minutes. It will keep track of your score. But this is a learning tool, and may
be best gone through a second time for better comprehension.

Also, computers are not just about the Windows OS. There are Anti-Virus
programs, and various firewalls, and conflicting programs.

Casual users are not likely to know 6 different AV programs, 7 different
firewall programs, and the difference between burning programs and buffer
underuns. Only those who have been through the ringer get that far. So, one
casual person may specialize with one AV program and one firewall, and other
machines that have that same setup may only show up 7% of the time in a shop.

Computer fixers need to know how to do scan disk, and defrags.
Many users complain about AOL, yet I've never had AOL...lucky me.


What is your point of quizzing people? Is there a Boys & Girls Club that has
computers and a few 15 year olds are itching for more responsibility? Computers
bring out the Achilles' Heel in everyone, and maybe you don't want to shove
blame down their throat because they didn't know any better. Computers can go
down without ANY reason, and making a 15 year old buy a replacement computer for
some sh*t that wasn't even anybody's fault is just....wrong.

All computers should be hooked up with a battery backup...and Staples is selling
a 450 watt version for $105 today, a little more than I have purchasing
authority for from the parents. A lot of computers need upgrades and
accessories, and a lot of users are just very lax and disrepecting of required
items, like Windows Critical Updates.

Given that the OP is not interested in using the MS Skills Assessment, it is
highly unlikely that he will be interested in an MS tutorial.
